What is the Main Reason for Being A Vegetarian?

Today, vegetarianism still continues to be a controversial topic. People all over the world have started to adopt a vegetarian diet for various reasons. These include health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare or the use of antibiotics and hormones in livestock; or a desire to eat in a way that avoids excessive use of environmental resources

So, what is the main reason?  And do we have to go vegan to be a Buddhist?

    I’ve been a vegetarian for 5 years now and feel absolutely healthy! I feel so sorry for the animals in meat and dairy industries… When you eat meat, think of where it comes from. It comes from animal cruelty! 🙁
